Documentary

Production Log 6

During the time from the last production log till this production log a lot of significant events had taken place. From the sunday to this thursday a lot of work had been done. On the monday I came back to school during my free periods, the reason for this was to film some more school shots, the school shots which we filmed were some more vox pops with students, and we also filmed two more interviews. One of the interviews was with Ms Oguntayo who is a parent, the reason we interviewed her was because it was important to have someone who has children and their view on if their children should use social media or not. This interview was done relatively shortly as she gave quick but correct answers. The second interview was done with a student who is named Aarun, this was a person who is a social media addict, it was important to have an addict on the documentary as the audience could see how much social media has effected him. We asked questions such as how much time he spends on social media daily and the answer we received was startling as he said he spends 10 hours on social media daily, we also asked more questions such as what he would do if social media was taken away from him and as he's an addict he said that he wouldn't be able to live without it. We filmed many cutaways also during this interview as we showed him using social media on a computer and his phone.
I also had a phone interview, this phone interview was with a social media expert who is named Kevin Poulter, we recorded this phone interview from a recorder so that I could put it in the documentary. As I was completing the production I was also coming into lessons to edit the filming which I had completed. I didn't really face any problems during this last week of the production log as all of the work was finished on time.

Production Log 5

During the time from the last production log till this present date, significant events have yet again been made. The events were made from the thursday to this sunday. In the last production I had noted down that I had done some filming which were the park scenes. From that day I have done some more filming. The shots which I did were doing some more park shots and school shots. Some of the shots took quite long to fulfil as one of the shots in the park wasn't done correctly the first few times because there was a lot of wind in the background which effected hearing the presenter talk. I also had to re-film a shot of the presenter talking about a statistic because the camera was a little bit bent because it was on the grass which caused it to be slanted. As I re-filmed these shots correctly I then had to go to school and film some school shots. The shots which I had to film at school were an interview and vox pops. The interview that was dine was with Mr Rumble who is a psychology teacher at Chadwell Heath. The reason we interviewed him was to see his opinion on how he thinks social media effects teenagers, we asked him a series of questions which was help get more answers, for example we asked what age range he believes uses social media the most and also how he thinks social media effects teenagers psychologically and we asked more questions too. The answers and reasons which we received from him were very good and helped validate the reasons. The vox pops which we did were with school students as w wanted to see if their parents allowed them to use social media or not and if they didn't allow them then what reasons they had. I also started editing the footage which I had filmed in the past week, there was a lot of footage to edit so we got on with that during lessons and I was out filming when lessons weren't on. I ended up editing about 50% of the production. The problems which we had were getting to arrange a meeting with Mr Rumble as he was too busy on most of the days which were planning on filming him. By the next production log I am aiming on finishing the whole of the filming.

Production Log 4

During the time from the last production log till this present date, significant events have taken place. I had started fulfilling my filming for my social media documentary. This was from Sunday to the present thursday. As all of my pre production paperwork was completed I started on the filming for the documentary as everything was planned out. On the Monday I started my filming, I started off with filming in the park as they were the first scenes which were supposed to be shot in the documentary. These shots were consisting of scenery shots and shots of the presenter talking. The first shot was of the presenter talking to the camera explaining who he was and what this specific documentary was going to be based on. The next few shots were based on facts, in these three shots the presenter provided some facts on social media and how it effects teenagers and provided statistics. We got these shots done as the last time when we were going to film the procedure got delayed due to rain. The next few shots which we completed were scenery shots of the park including the basketball court, playing area and skating area. The next day we came back to the park to film another shot which was of the presenter explaining why he was at the park as it was for an experiment. We didn't necessarily face any big problems during this time. By the next production log I aim on getting about 40% of the production completed.

Production Log 3

During the time period from last Thursday to this Sunday, I have finished some aspects of work. I made improvements to my location recee as I added a new location which was a park. The reason I added a park to the documentary was to ensure that the documentary will look pleasant and appealing to the audience and in a good location instead of just dull and boring locations such as an office or a room where you can't get much done and doesn't look as appealing. The park will be used for some scenery shots and also for some shots where the presenter talks and explains what is going on. I also in this time updated my production schedule as I added more information to the boxes of when I am planning to film, I added if I was going to be filming and where, for example I wrote on Saturday 14th 'On this day I will be starting my filming the shots will be filmed in the park where scenery shots and the presenter talking'. Some challenges which we faced were on the filming days as on one of the days it was raining throughout the time which we were meant to film in the morning so we had to delay the filming by a little while. By my next production schedule I aim on getting some filming done.

Production Log 2

During this time I have done a few things. Since my last production log I have started to make graphics on the imacs which the school provides. The graphics which I have made are some of the interviewees names, I have chosen a special font for the interviewee and below their name it will say the job which they do, for example I had Kevin Poulter, then below this name I had in brackets (Social Media Specialist) implying that this is the specific job which they have. For the interviewees name I tried to make the content look very appealing, I tried to use social media logos for some of the interviewees characters in their names, for example I used the Twitter 'T' logo for the T in Poulters name and I used the Pinterest logo for the 'P'. I also made the opening title for the documentary. For my next production log I will have hoped to have done some filming as I need to make my introduction for the documentary and I need to get the interviews done with the two psychologists.

Production Log 1

During this week of work I was completing the task of recievig interviewers from the people who I desire to be included in my interview as they will have an important role of providing information, facts and opinions. I sent out many emails to different people hoping I would get some feedback which I did in the end. During this week I also completed the tasks of doing the pre production documents, these consisted of a call sheet, crew list, location recee, risk assessment form and a production schedule. On the location recee I had to put down which locations I was planning on filming in and I also wrote what the use of the location was for. In the crew list I had to simply write who was going to be involved in the crew for the production, I had to write who the camera operator is, who the director is, who the presenter is and other aspects. In the risk assessment form I had to make note of each location where shots will be filmed and write which risks could hapopen in that location, I also had to write how high the risk is rated and how it could be controlled. The logistical challenges which I faced were recieving feedback for interviews. Before my next production log I will have hoped to have recieved the full feedback from my interviewees so I can know when to meet them and head for an interview

These are the five main questions which I wish to get answered:

Questions which I wish to get answered are:

For psychologist and social media expert and social media organiser:

  1. When did social media start start taking effect as a whole?
  2. What age range does social media effect the most?
  3. How does social media effect teenagers psychologically?
  4. Who in genders uses it more?
  5. How does social media effect teenagers spare time?

Vox Pops for students:

Is social media good or bad?

How often do you use social media?

Do your parents allow you to use social media?

Narrative Arc

The narrative arc which I have made is an analysis of the documentary which I am planning to make.
I plan on answering these main questions in separate sections:

Section 1

VT (Video Tape):

For the first section there will be a VT introduction to introduce the documentary which is about to be shown. The introduction will be made as a VT (Video Tape). The video will contain a montage of different shots which are related to social media so it will show images and videos of facebook, twitter and other social media websites etc and it will also show images and videos of teenagers using social media. The VT will also contain shots of the presenter to introduce the presenter to the audience. As it will be a VT the locations will be from many different places however they will all be filmed previously and not in real time when the documentary was shot. The duration of this section which is the VT will be 40 seconds, I feel as this is a right amount of duration as there will be enough time in that 40 seconds to cover all the shots and graphics.

Section 2

Introduction:

For the second section of the documentary there will be an introduction. This section is going to be a Piece to the Camera. A piece to camera shot is when someone is right in front of the camera speaking directly to it so it seems as if they are talking to the audience. In this section the presenter of the documentary will be addressing the subject. It will be a male presenter, the male presenter is going to use this introduction to introduce the subject by explaining a little bit about it and what it is. He will explain what aims he wishes to get answered throughout the whole documentary as there will be five main questions which he aims to get answered. In this section the presenter will be walking past many different locations and also may walk past a group of teenagers whilst they are on their phones. The duration of this section will be roughly 55 seconds as I feel this will be enough time to get the whole introduction from the presenter through, the presenter will also present himself as a teenager and will stress that he is also trying to find out the information out for himself also..."I will be trying to find out..."

Section 3

Presenter:

In the third section the presenter is going to have the main role. The presenter is going to introduce many different facts and statistics whilst not being on camera. there is going to be a voiceover where the presenter is going to be talking about what life was like before social media came along and changed everything. As the presenter is going on about what life was like before social media came along there will be pictures showing what has been introduced into the world such as twitter and facebook, for example it will show how in previous years people had to write letters to each other in forms of communication but now they can simply log onto facebook or twitter and if they are following the other person or have them as a friend they can simply write a message to them publicly or privately. This section will run on for about 2 minutes.

Section 4

Convention Shots:

In this section the documentary is going to include shots of the media convention summed up into a montage, it will show shots of the different people that were talking, the buiding, inside the building and different peoples reactions with music playing throughout. This section will roughly be about 30 seconds.

Section 5

Convention:

In this section it will be focused on the convention which the presenter is going to attend. The convention is going to be at the London Social Media Cafe where people who share an interest in social media come and talk about the effects and generally about it. In the section it is going to show shots of what occurs in the convention and some of the people who spoke and shared their own opinions on the matter. This section will be around 4 minutes.

Section 6

Convention Vox Pops

After the convention is finished the presenter will go and ask some of the volunteers short closed questions about social media, the questions will be based on the documentaries subject and will ask questions regarding how social media effects teenagers. This section will run on for roughly a minute.

Section 7

Convention answers summed up:

In this section I will make graphics which will contain statistics from the vox pops with the people from the convention, it will contain statistics such as a graph of how many people said yes and how many people said no.

Section 8

Presenter

In this section the presenter will recap what went on in the convention and summarise it all. This section will go on for a minute.

Section 9

Psychologist:

In this section the presenter will have a meeting with a psychologist, the reason for this is to get a more in depth view with the situation and see how exactly a psychologist would think that social media effects teenagers, this will be one of the main interviews so it will last at least 3 minutes.

Section 10

Vox Pops with school students

In this section the presenter will go to people in the lower year students who are just becomming teenagers and ask them short closed questions such as if their parents let them use social media.

Section 11:

Main Interview

In this section will be the main interview, this interview will be with Kevin Poulter who is an expert in social media, he has already agreed to meet and we will have the main interview at a set location. This interview will last about 4 minutes.

Section 12:

This section will be a montage of everything which occured throughout the documentary to cap it all off.

Proposal

For my documentary I plan to base it on Social Media

Aims

The question which my documentary aims to answer is 'how does social media currently effect teenagers social life and spare time'. There are five main questions which I aim to get answered in this documentary. I aim to answer this by having a well limited lengthened documentary which will have enough time to show enough information on this subject. The five main questions which I wish to get answered are:
  1. When did social media start start taking effect as a whole?
  2. What age range does social media effect the most?
  3. How does social media effect teenagers psychologically?
  4. Who in genders uses it more?
  5. How does social media effect teenagers spare time?

Content

In my documentary I plan on showing many aspects which will be viewed as the important content. I plan on containing a lot of interviews in this documentary, by interviews it means that there will be a lot of short interviews and a lot of vox pops. By having vox pops it will result in me receiving a short answer on the subject, the interviewer will be asking short questions to people in the public, the answers that we will get will most likely be closed answers which mean that the answers will mostly contain either Yes or No's. By the short interviews I plan on receiving a more of a developed answer by the interviewee, as these won't be vox pops we will have more time to sit down and have more of a time consumed interview with whoever the interviewee is. By having both of these type of interviews it will show that there are two types of answers that you can get and this will give a good side to the documentary. The other types of content that will be shown in the documentary will also be a lot of graphics, by graphics it means that there will be a lot of graphs and statics, at the beginning of the documentary there will be secondary graphs and statistics which appear on the screen showing facts about social media and towards the end of the documentary there will be primary graphs and statistics as they will be based on the information that has been found out primarily throughout the whole documentary.

Target audience

The target audience for my documentary is going to be 13 - 24. In the brief that we received it said that the documentary should be from 16 - 24 however I feel that it would be a better idea for my subject to based it from a younger audience too and this is because 13 is roughly the age when people start using social media and it is also the age when kids become teenagers so it will be a learning type documentary for them. The target audience is also going to be unisex and this is because both genders use social media just as much as the other and from primary research I have also found out an interesting fact which said that women use social media more than men. In the documentary I would expect my audience to have some knowledge on social media as most of the world are already active social media users and this is because most people have computers and phones which have the availability of social media.

Genre

The genre of this piece of work is going to be a documentary, it will be a short lengthed documentary which will be made just like a well known documentary however will be elegantly different.

Format

The format of this documentary is going to be in participatory mode, this is because there will be a lot of engagement between the presenter and the subject of the documentary. The presenter is going to go to many different places where they will be trying to find out as much information as possible regarding the subject.

Analyzing The Competition

Analyzing the Competition

In this blog post I will be finding three shows which are currently on television and that can be compared with my documentary which I will be creating soon.

Hackers:

How hackers changed the world was a documentary which was aired on BBC, it was a 58.21 minute long documentary and was based on hackers using computers to develop many different ways of hacking into many systems and programmes.
The documentary wasn't really similar to my idea for my documentary as i wont be basing mine on hackers infact I will be basing mine on the effects which social media has on teenagers lives.

Catfish TV Show

Catfish is a tv show which is based on people who make fake profiles on online social media and meet people with a fake identity, the reasons are normally revealed in the show, sometimes the reasons vary between emotional problems as the person behind the fake profiles just want to make a fake profile to simply feel better about themselves. other reasons sometimes also vary between money issues as they force money out of the victims

This show is similar to mine as it is based around social media. At 2:32 we see where the social media aspects come from as the presenter in the voiceover says 'until I met felicia on a dating website'. Dating websites are used as social media as many people can interact with each other and provide their own details for other people to see. The show airs on tuesdays and saturdays on the channel MTV. The viewing figures are between 55 000 and 54 000. Those are pretty big figures for a show which is based on social media. The show doesn't always just show online dating sites, you would also find that sites like twitter and facebook are also used for catfishing and my documentary is going to include a lot of information about twitter and facebook.

The social network

The social network is actually a film by Sony Pictures Entertainment. The movie is based on Mark Zuckerberg who is the creator of Facebook. The movie is a reconstruction of the story behind Mark making facebook as he got sued by two brother who claimed that Mark stole their idea for making the social media website.

The film is similar to my idea for my documentary as it is also based around social media. In the trailer from 0:00 to the 0:50 mark we see a lot of use of social media as throughout that whole time lapse as we see facebook being used in many different ways as we see people changing their statuses, images and relationship statuses. At 1:10 mark says 'talking about taking the entire experience of college and putting it online' so this was the basic idea behind making Facebook. It is also similar to my documentary as I will be basing many aspects on facebook and showing how it has developed over the years and how it is effecting teenagers.

The gadget show

The gadget show is a show which reviews gadgets regularly.
The show isn't really similar to my idea for my documentary however we could still say that it is similar in a way as it normally reviews technology and social media is used on technology.

Secondary Research for Final Idea

Five Key Questions

1) When did social media start taking effect as a whole?

The first email was actually sent in 1971 and the message which was sent was 'qwertyuiop'. However, the first social networking site was created 1994 and this site was named GeoCites. This website was created for users who wished to create and customise their own websites. Then the next year another website was launched and this site was named TheGlobe. This site had the availability for users to interact with other users who use the website to share their hobbies and interests.
So this was when social networking was established as the first sign of communication by computer systems.

AOL messenger started up in 1997 and this was the first initial site which was used being a social media site where people fully interact with each other

http://www2.uncp.edu/home/acurtis/NewMedia/SocialMedia/SocialMediaHistory.html

2) What age range does social media effect the most?

Apon doing a lot of research I have found many different articles and facts about which age group uses social media the most, and this statistic stuck out the most to me as it is from the years of 2005 to 2013. This was useful to know as it tells you that it is in most recent times and it lets us know which ages of current people in the world are using the social media the most. Apon looking at the statistics carefully I found that the ages of 18 to 29 are the ages which contain the most social media users. This statistic was very useful to me as I gained information that most 18 and 19 year olds use a lot of social media websites and the good aspect is that those two ages were going to be included in my target audience for my documentary so when those two ages watch the documentary they will be able to visualise and relate to it.

3) How does social media effect teenagers psychologically?

I couldn't really find the correct information on this question as pretty much every article I found spoke about teenage victimization which is not quite what i was looking for

4) Which gender uses social media more?

For looking at which gender in the human race uses social media the most I had to do a lot of research, by doing this I found an interesting statistic which can be seen in the image above. The statistic actually tells us that women use social media more on cell phones which may come as a surprise to many people. The statistic tells us that 41% of women use social media on their cell phones and

5) How does it effect the teenagers spare time?

Apon doing research I found an article which provided me with good information in which what type of effects that social media has on teenagers. Above we see that social media sites are used to 'keep up with social ties' and what this quote means is that many teenagers use the social media websites to update themselves on what is going on in the world currently, so in another way, they use it to update them as being a news type source. I also found a strange fact which said that 'the average user of social networking site has more close ties and is half as likely to be socially isolated as the average American'

Documenting Documentaries Modes

Modes of Documentaries

There are main types of modes from Nicholls:

1) The Expository Mode (Voice of God)
2) The observational Mode(Window on the World)
3) The Interactive Mode
4) The Performative Mode
5) The Reflexive Mode

Normally a documentary would contain one of these three conventions:

Realism: When a documentary shows real footage. To do this they tend to use hand held camera shots to make the audience feel as if they are in the scene themselves.
  • Actual footage
  • Eye Witnesses
  • Fast paces editing
  • Lower Production quality
Dramatization: When a documentary show dramatization it is when it professional type of languages to make the documentary seem more dramatized.
  • Uses a lot of suspense
  • A lot of professional actors
Narrativisation: Narrativisation documentaries are when it tends to show footage which conveys the story behind the documentaries.
  • Normally has voice-overs to explain the story
  • Has presentation of facts in order to create a story

The Expository Mode:

The expository mode is the type of documentary which emphasises verbal commentary, this means that this type of documentary would normally have a narrator which narrates over the whole documentary, this is where it gets the name as the 'Voice of God'. As it has a narration it tends to narrate everything which is going on in the shots such as it would give information about where the shots are set and what is exactly happening at the current time. It normally offers a preferred meaning so that the producers could intend for the audience to see the content in a certain way. Normally this mode is used in nature documentaries

The example I have chosen is a documentary named Arctic Tale

The documentary is called Arctic Tale, it based on two narratives, one which is 'the life cycle of a mother walrus and her calf' and the other narrative being 'the life of a polar bear and her cubs'. The documentary was made to 'illustrate the harsh realities' which the animals in the arctic go through to live everyday. The documentary was also made by the same people who made 'March of the Penguins'. The reason which I have chosen this documentary is because it fits into the mode of expository. The reason for this is because it emphasises a lot on verbal commentary, this shown as it uses a voice over throughout the whole documentary. The rule that it used was also objectivity, this is because many facts were stated throughout the documentary about the different types of animals in the arctic. Another rule which it used was Accuracy, this is because all of the footage was real footage meaning it was archive footage, nothing was staged as it is a nature documentary.

Voiceover
What makes this documentary an expository mode documentary is the fact that it contains a voiceover. The narration in this documentary was done by Queen Latifah who is a very famous actress and this may be one of the reasons why the makers decided to include Latifah as the voiceover as many people would recognise her voice and be interested by the documentary. The voiceover is used to narrate the story to the audience viewing from home. It is another way to provide facts and statistics than just conveying them on the screen in writing.

Actuality Footage
This is another convention which the documentary uses as the basis of the whole documentary, this means that the whole documentary contains real actuality footage.

The main convention which this documentary uses is narrativisation and this is because the whole documentary contains a voiceover throughout explaining what is occuring. It also shows realism as the footage that is used is actuality footage which means that none of the footage is fake and scripted, all of the shots and scenes are done in reality and done as it happens.

The Observational Mode:

The observational mode is the mode that the audience are meant to observe in their own view. They are also known as Fly on the Wall documentaries. They are normally known as being very objective and by this it means that they like to provide a lot of facts which are true. The mode started to get very popular in the 60's as this was when the 16mm video cameras started to be made. This mode of documentary has a very important aim which they take very seriously and that aim is to provide whatever they are trying to show us in the most correct and accurate way possible. The filmmaker will normally stay hidden behind the camera as they shoot the film and this is because they do not interfere or influence with the filmmaking process.

The example which I have chosen is 'Warnock'

I have used this example because I have seen it before and have now acknowledged that it is a good example for the Observational Mode. The documentary is about a football manager who is named Neil Warnock, this manager is someone who in his career has been very well known to be on of footballs most 'passionate, outspoken but controversial figures'. The documentary goes behind the scenes of his managerial career and contains meny interviews and footage of the job that he does.

Screenshot from Documentary
Above I have placed a screen shot from the documentary at 20:24. Here it is showing after the football match in the locker room where it shows that Neil is very angry at his players after a poor performance from his players. As he is having his rant at the players the viewer can see that the camera is following Neil at every move that he makes, even when his back is towards the camer it will still show him and his movements, this is to make it seem as realistic as possible. As we see at 21:29 it also shows close ups of the players looking very sad and depressed from the rant which they have just recieved. As it is a close up and on a hand held camera it would make the viewer seem as if they are there with the players in the locker room recieving the rant.

Set Ups

As the documentary is in real life places there is no fake sets used in this documentary, everything that is shot in this documentary is done in the actual places where the events took place such as the football matches in the football stadiums, the cameras were behind Warnock as they were watching his reactions and voices throughout the match.

Actuality Footage

Everything which was shot in this documentary was shot in real footage, in observational documentaries you wouldn't really find any reconstructed scenes as these types of documentaries are made to seem as real as possible to the viewer.

The Interactive Mode

The participatory mode, also known as the Interactive mode is the mode where this time the filmmaker actually does have involvement with the documentary. When this happens it kind of makes it feel as if the filmmaker is another character in the documentary. They will normally influence the documentary meaning they will also take maybe with the people who are in the shots such as if they are having an interview the filmmaker may be talking behind the camera or actually having a face to face interview with the interviewee.

The example which I have chosen is Michael Moore's Capitalism A Love Story

I have chosen a documentary named Capitalism A Love Story which is directed by and starring Michael Moore who is a very famous director and well known for making participatory mode documentaries. It is a film from September 6th 2009 and it is based on the impact that corporate dominance has on everyday lives of Americans.

I have used this example because throughout the whole documentary, Michael has an influence and input. He also does the voiceover in this documentary as he provides facts and statistics to the audience.

The images I have placed above are from 13:35 in the documentary. At this point Michael is getting ready to have an interview with a playwriter, he first introduces the man on the voiceover by saying he specialises in 'playwriting and sometimes acting, but Wally also studied history and politics' and this is why Michael is going to have an interview with him as he would like to see Wallys thought on the whole situation. The second picture shows both Wally and Michael together crossing a road, this immediately shows Michaels involvement as he is walking with Wally and covering him with an unbrella over his head and it is all shown in the shot showing that Michael has involvement. The first picture which I used was during the interview, it is showing a reaction shot of Michael whilst Wally was explaining himself to him. It didn't just show his reaction once but multiple times to show the audience how he is reacting to all of the information he is gaining.

Narrativisation

This is used in this documentary as Michael has a big role of using the voiceover to explain pretty much everything which is occuring in the film. He also provides information such as at 25:50 he says 'for 35 years GMB made more money than any other corporation' whilst he is saying this in the voiceover, the camera shot is showing the GMB building so it is sort of builiding a story.

Archive Footage

As the documentary mostly focuses on real life events it does however also show archive footage meaning it shows old videos from the past, for example at 25:56 it shows a very old video of workers with cars when he is talking about the car industries.

The Reflexive Mode

Reflexive mode documentaries are quite different to the other ones which I have explained above, Reflexive documentaries do still focus on the full truth however they focus on showing the truth in a more of a constructed manner. This means that the documentary will most likely show scenes of reconstructions or the whole documentary will be a full reconstruction of the events that occured in whatever situation. The film will normally have a narrative behind it as it is explaining a story to the viewer.

The example which I will use is Driving Me Crazy by Nick Broomfield

The example which I chose was called Driving me Crazy by Nick Broomfield who is a famous filmmaker. The film was based on a lot of behind the scenes in making a musical as it shows many thinks such as the egos of the performers, the budgets that musicals have and general processes that take place in musicals. Nick is an award winning director

Actuality Footage

Pretty much the whole documentary is real footage which the filmmaker has shot and it also shows real footage shooting real shows and interviews.

Interviews:

In terms of interviews the documentary contains a lot of vox pops which are short little shots where someone is saying something infront of the camera, for example at 1:25 it shows a woman infront of the camera saying 'you've got 35 people waiting for 2 hours and it's not just about the film, you have to be considerate of these people'. Here she is talking to the filmmaker and angry at him as she thinks they are messing with the performers dreams.

Above we can see a screenshot from the documentary, in this shot at 0:42 it shows the filmmaker Nick Broomfield and a crew member filming themselves infront of the mirror at the dance rehearsals and at this point he is saying in the voiceover that the crew has 'reduced to two' which means the crew has become shorter since a while. This shows the realism as he is saying a real fact which is quite personal to the film crew that the audience shouldn't really know about.

The Performative Mode

Performative mode documentaries are films which emphasize the nature which is subjective by the documentarian meaning the filmmaker. By providing facts, they are made to give the audience facts and statistics of whatever the documentary is based on, sometimes the filmmaker will take part in the documentary to let the audience get a clearer view and receive the documentarians views and opinions too.

The example which I have chosen is Supersize Me by Morgan Spurlock

This documentary is by Morgan Spurlock and it is based on experimenting and examining the influence that the fast food industry has on people in America. It looks how fast food has made a lot of Americans overweight. It also provides a lot of facts and statistics such as how obesity has come to the same level of dangerous health issues as smoking and drinking. 400 000 deaths per year are associated with obesity liked ilnesses in America and are mostly caused by fast food which is shown at 2:06. The documentary shows a lot of Actuality Footage as it is trying to convey realism to the audience. It shows a lot of shots of people casually walking down the streets in America to show the viewer differences between the overweight and normal weight people such as at 2:11.

Graphs

The documentary also used a lot of graphs to convey the facts and statistics such as at 2:26 the voiceover is saying that a lot of americans complained to fast food restaurants on behalf of two teenage girls and the pictures above show their ages and the sizes which they are at the current stage being very overweight for that age. He then went on to say that because of the two girls shapes people started to sue the fast food merchandises

Interviews

Morgan also had a few interviews in the documentary such as at 41:00 he talks to a man in a fast food restaurant who is similar to himself as he also tried experimenting the way Morgan is as he said he came in one day and ordered '9 Big Macs' and he then had 'Two hundred and sixty five' in just one month and 'seven hundred and forty one' in a whole year.

The filmmaker Morgan was heavily involved in the documentary as he took part in a 30 day experiment by eating McDonald's everyday to see what effects it would have on his body, by just a few days he started experiences problems such as 'a really weird feeling right in my mid section' which is not something you would normally recieve after eating.

Conventions of a News Package

News Package

A news package is an edited news report which is featured in a news show. It is normally self-contained which means it is involved with the news report. Normally the package could either be pre-recorded or live in real time. A news package normally consists of having a presenter who introduces what the news package will be based on.

There are 6 main conventions of a news package:

  • Field Reporters
  • Links to Studio
  • Mode of Address to Viewer
  • Interviewing Experts and Witnesses
  • Report Structure
  • Actuality Footage

Field Reporters

A Field Reporter is a presenter for the news package who goes to the location of where the news report is based on. The reporter will report on the news from that location, they will provide information about the news report. The field reporter is normally quite educated and you can normally tell by how confidently they present their facts and statistics. Being a field reporter you may need to

Links to Studio

Links to studio is a news report is usually when the field reporter from their location communicates with the news reports main presenter. This is normally done by being live on television and they communicate by seeing each other on their own respective camera screens, normally it would be the main news reporter seeing the field reporter from a live feed on their screen, as the field reporter is on the scene they wouldn't be able to see the main reporter as they are not in the studio. As they are both live the news reporter would normally ask the field reporter questions about what is occuring on the scene.

Mode of address to viewer

The mode of address to the viewer is normally how the viewer sees the news reporter from the reporters point of view, it is important to consider what kind of presenter is presenting the news as it needs to be the right kind of presenter to do the job sufficiently and draw in a larger audience. The important aspects are normally the presenters:

  • Tone of voice
  • Accent
  • Language
  • Eye Contact

Interviewing experts and witnesses

Having an interview is something that is in pretty much every news report, whether the news report be on a serious topic, sad topic or entertaining topic you will most likely always see an interview used some time in a news report. They are used so that the viewer can get not just the facts and statistics but also opinions from other people and this is important as the viewer can expand their knowledge and build credibility from this also. The aspects that are considered in interviews are:
  • Locations
  • Camera techniques
  • Status of the interviewee
  • Graphics
  • Questioning technique

Report Structure

The report structure in a news report is structure in which the news report takes place, there is normally an order which the news report takes place in, below is an example I made for the beginning of a news report and the structure which is follows.

c
Actuality Footage

Actuality footage is the footage that is shown in a news report, it is normally previously recorded footage and is pretty much always archive footage which contains information about what the news report is based on. They are usually shown to expand the viewers knowledge and give them a sense of view of what is was like at the time when the footage was made.

)
The video which I am going to use to show specific conventions is a news report on 'Obama Admin misleading on Libya attack'

This news report was on quite a serious topic as it was based on a terror attack in Libya which killed four Americans. The news report startes off with a ews anchor who starts off by talking about the news report and presents the facts about what occured in Libya at that event. The news anchor is wearing a suit in the news report and this is because he is a proffesional and experienced in the line of the job. Wearing a suit makes the presenter look well presented as it shows proffesionalism. As we see whilst the anchor is presenter is presenting the news, the framing is on the rule of thirds shot and this proven as you can visualise that the anchors eyes a third way down the shot, this is shown straight away from 0:00. The presenters ethnicity is pretty much a middle classed white man, this is the right choice of a presenter becuase it may be due to ABC's ethics to have a middle class white man to anchor the news, as they normally have a set choice of presenter they don't normally change them. The body language of the anchor is very straight forward with his back straight and he doesn't really make any body movements apart from moving his head whilst talking, this shows professionalism as they as experienced in presenting the news.

The news report also contains a field reporter who is at another location, this is shown when the anchor introduces the field reporter at 0:18, when the news reporter introduces the field reporter we see that the shot changes to a split show, now we see two people on the screen and they are the anchor and the field reporter. The field reporter is also a very sophisticatd proffesional as the way he presents his facts and opinions shows that he has a vast amount of knowledge based on the story. The camera is also on rule of thirds here as the field reporter is in the middle of the screen and their eyes are a third way down the shot. The tone of voice that the field reporter contains is very bold and speaks with a lot of emphasis as it shows that he has a lot of knowledge on what he is speaking about, this shows a lot of authority. The accent that the field reporter possesses is very strong American as you can tell by the tone, you can also sort of tell that he has been living in America throughout his entire life as that's how strong his accent was. The language which he used was very formal english as he speaks in sophisticated language, they are both looking towards the camera which is a direct address as it makes it seem as if they are communicating to each other in person and to the audience at home.
The report structure used in this news report was quite simple, it goes in the order of:
News anchor starts the report by presenting the news and facts
Then the news anchor introduces the field reporter who has more knowledge on the situation
Then a VT plays showing evidence of the story and real life events that occured and there is also a voiceover playing in the background. The VT also contains graphics which show facts and statistics
Then it goes back to the field reporter who communicates with the anchor
The field reporter then gives the rest to the anchor and the anchor ends the news report

The news report also plays archive footage which is previously recorded footage, this is at 0:33 when the voiceover is presenting the news, the archive footage that is shown is of the terror attacks when they were occuring live, this is shown as it shows buildings burning and a lot of protesting. There is also a short interview type part in the news package at 1:05 as it is placed in the White House as the location, the camera techniques contain a lot of shot changes as it goes back to Jake and then back to the who is being interviewed. They were all experts and provided expert opinions and facts. The graphics used are the people's names and it contains their jobs names, for example at 01:07 it says 'Jay Carney, White House Press Secretary'.
